Zombie slowness

I've been rather slow lately getting any personal work done of any sorts.

Anyway a small update on this severed zombie head. Still some detailing to do (sores, etc.) and symmetry to remove. I also still need to work on the severed area as well as finish off the teeth, and then it's on to texturing.

Detailing zombie head

Added some porous detail to the head. I'll offset the overall symmetry by dislocating his jaw (I've added that detail on another layer in ZBrush). I'll post that in my next update, once I'm happy with it. I'll also add more deeper damage in places. I originally had part of his jawbone exposed but wasn't too happy with it and found it a bit distracting. Again this is a prop for another character, so I'm not going to go into too much detail with it.

Not too much left to do except what I've mentioned above and a few other things; his teeth haven't had much done to them yet - I'll most likely break and skew a few as well as remove a couple. The "severed" part of course needs work (loose flesh, etc.)... then it's on to texturing the sucker!

Some of the texture work that I did for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 whilst I was MPC last year. I textured the caravan (1:25 minutes into this clip). Unfortunately the digi-double that I also textured isn't really very visible in the film - I spent around 3 weeks texturing him :(

I've decided that I'm most likely going to render her in Marmoset from 8monkey Labs. I'm quite happy with the results so far - still busy tweaking secondary textures (specular, etc.) and shaders and lighting. I'm also busy posing her and thinking of a way to actually present her for the final beauty shots.

I'm mostly done with her tattoos now (I might still tweak them a bit). You might have noticed that I desaturated most of her tattoos. Which is more in line with my original idea for her. Besides I also think they work a lot better this way.

I'm going to step away from her for a few days, and hopefully come back with a fresh pair of eyes. Then it's on to one or two other tweaks and then stick all the textures onto one texture sheet. Optimise (a bit). Set up proper shaders. Pose. Light. Render! I might still make a base for her. Not sure what yet... and then... hopefully move onto another character - non real-time!!

Some more Photoshop nudes

Just a couple of quick drawings done in Photoshop using some photo reference for the pose of the first one. The second one was sort of a loose copy of a photo.

I've really been enjoying drawing again lately. I think I'll be doing loads more of these in between doing my 3D (yes, I'm doing 3D). I'm still getting the hang of drawing again (in Photoshop) and developing a bit of a style in the process. That and having fun.

Tattoos

I'm finalizing all the tattoos now. Still got a few left to colour and possibly then blend them a bit better with the underlying skin and then I can call them done. What a pain...

Once these are done, it's just a matter of baking all the textures onto one sheet (I've textured each part on a separate texture page), posing her and creating a base. So, hopefully not too much longer to go. I really, really need to finish her off... really!

At the moment this is still just a viewport grab from within Max so the specular, etc. is still not perfect. I'll be creating proper shaders for her when the time comes.

I think she is quite possibly going to be my last "low poly" model for a long time.

Living Dead Girl Concept

A quick concept I did for a possible 3D character I'm hoping to start in the process of completing my Punk Girl (yes I know she's been dragged out forever). She's loosely based on a girl I saw standing next to me on the subway.

I used Jan Ditlev Christensen's pencil brushes for Photoshop which you can grab from CGHub - thanks to my bud Serge Birault for the tip. These brushes are great and I'm hoping to do more with them.

Let's hope I can get rid of this cold now :(

Painting nudes...

It's been a while I know, between sorting out some tattoos for my Punk Girl and planning multiple new 3D characters, I've been getting back into some Photoshop painting again. I want to try get quite a few of these "quick" studies done. I really enjoy doing these and they do go reasonably quick... well quick in comparison to a 3D character of mine that is. Not sure if I'll add them to Unearthedart or not.

I used a photo as ref for this one. Just as a base for the main figure, expression, etc.

Okay so most of you have probably forgotten by now that I have a blog. And I honestly don't blame you, seeing as how I haven't updated in ages. I promise you that I have been working, quite hard, to finish off my Punk Girl. I'll post some images sooooon.

In the meantime I have updated Unearthedart.com with some shots taken from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 "Epic Finale" Featurette. I did the texturing of the caravan (1:45 into the clip) in case you were wondering. I also did some digi-double work, unfortunately that's not in the featurette.

I've been doing some texture clean-up and modelling on Punk Girl and one or two other things. I'll hopefully have a small update soon. I also need to get my portfolio website back up and running. Mostly just cleaning it up. I might possibly do a total redesign at some stage. Not now though.

My first day as a Texture Artist at Cinesite...

Well, today was my first day as a Texture Artist at Cinesite. I'll be working on the very exciting film, John Carter of Mars.

I've just spent the last month working with the very talented guys over at Slide London on an upcoming AAA video game title. I really enjoyed myself working there and will really miss working with them. Hopefully I'll get the chance again in the near future.

Girl Bust 01 finished

I'm finally calling her finished... There are areas (especially the hair) that could still be worked on, but this was meant to be a quick sculpt of about 5-6 hours which became a bit more than that... so, time to move on.

Oh yeah... the headphones are loosely based on the Panasonic Retro Style Monitor Headphones.

I have a couple of ideas for my next bust...

Anatomy tweaking

I've been working on all three of my current projects at the moment: Girl Bust, Punk Girl, and this my Female Base model. Nothing much to see here really, just some minor anatomy tweaks (again) before I move on to the next sub-div level (still on 3). I've scaled up her head a bit, along with a few other adjustments.

I'll post updates on the others over the weekend I think...

Girl Bust 01 and some hair.

This has taken me an hour or two longer than I initially intended, but I think it's been worth the extra time. I've Mostly just been experimenting - trying to loosen up and get a more natural quality to my sculpts.

Anyway, I think she is mostly done. Just the hair now... I've blocked in some rough shapes so far. Not sure I'll stick to this hairstyle though...

Some progress... I think I've spent a few hours on her now. I should have done more in that time as I tend to get bogged town tweaking silly things instead of moving on and leaving the tweaking until the end. Anyway... I have also sculpted some hair for her, but will post that once I've made her asymmetrical and possibly re-posed her.

I've also noticed that the shape of head/face has changed quite a bit since the last image... I think for the better as well ;)

Girl Bust 01 A

This is second bust I've started since getting home from work tonight - the first was a total mess which I threw away. I'm quite rusty doing these sculpts so need more practice.

This one has taken around 30 - 45 minutes so far... I'll still add hair to her once most of the bust itself is done. The anatomy is still pretty rough... but anyway, I'm trying to loosen up.

Unearthedart

Unearthedart.com should hopefully be back up soon (hopefully by the end of the weekend). I'm in the process of re-uploading it after my web host had a serious hardware failure that took a full week to rectify. In the process, I'll also be removing most of the crap from the website and doing a small amount of tidying up, as it's in much need of an overhaul.

A small bit of work

I've been working on my base model on and off. She's still only on sub-division three, which would actually be sub-division 4 as my base mesh is more detailed than usual (see the wireframe here). I'm sticking to this level of detail for now until I have most of what's needed before sub-dividing her more.

I've also been working on my Punk Girl on and off. I need to swap out the old mesh with the new retopologised mesh in ZBrush so that I can bake the normal maps. I've been doing some tests by bringing the new retopologised mesh into Zbrush, but I'm getting spiking which sucks ass (strangely enough I never had this problem with my female base mesh when I tweaked the mesh's topology and brought it back into Zbrush). I also tried re-projecting instead, setting the PA Blur to 8 as suggested, but that didn't help too much - still getting weird spikes in the ears, eyes and mouth areas. If it becomes too painful I might just bake the normals in xNormal.

Edit: For some reason the hand thumbnail seems to be a different colour to what it is meant to be?!?

Punk Girl's progress...

I'm in the process of re-baking the normal maps for Punk Girl's body. I have also retopologised her ears and re-unwrapped them. I'm most likely going to redo the pouch on her bum as well, as I'm not too happy with it in it's present state. As far as all the detail around her waist goes (belts, etc.), I'm probably going optimise them slightly but leave them as separate overlapping geometry. Saying that I've decided to up the poly count to around 20000 tris/10000 polys.

Now hopefully I can pull myself away from playing Alan Wake long enough to get some work done on her this coming week.

I eventually got around to sorting out the images using Google's Picasa image hosting. It took a bit of jigging as I can't have images wider than 1600px which is a pain, but I can live with it... for now.

Missing Images

Sorry for those of you who came here expecting to see my work. Unfortunately my web host has suffered a massive hardware failure and has been down for about the past 3 days. I'm not using Blogger's image hosting at the moment as the images get resized and compressed really badly if they are too large - I like posting large images :)

I will however be making alternate plans to host my images, which should be back up by the end of the weekend.

My webhost is down.

The guys that host my website unearthedart are down. That's why most of the images on this blog are missing. Hopefully they will be up and running soon again. In the meantime I think I should look into hosting the images for this blog elsewhere.

Texturing Punk Girl last year...

This is where I last left off texturing her last year. I want to try and get stuck back into her soon. I just need to try and remember what I was doing last.

The texturing is in a really basic state at the moment and will most likely change quite a bit. I was just blocking everything in before getting into refining any of the texture work (dirt, rust, tattoos and so on...). Notice the lovely seam on her dome.

These screengrabs are using Laurens Corijn's realtime Xoliulshader. I probably won't use it for the final renders though, when I finish her off. I just find using a realtime shader along with regular Max shaders really helpful when doing the initial texturing

Please note: My screen grabs are using an old version (1.3) of the shader - there is a more up to date version. The only textures I've used here are diffuse and normal maps. The specular/gloss is from the shader.

Polygroups

I haven't done too much work on her since my last update - I've just been refining some areas and concentrating on the base forms. I've only used 3 levels of subdivision so far, that also being partly due to my lowest subdivision being a bit higher poly this time around.

I've also decided to use polygroups for this mesh, I know they are nothing new but they make editing tricky areas like the fingers and toes far easier.

I should hopefully be starting something new soon as well. Whether or not it's with this female mesh or not I'll have to see. I'm also hoping to carry on working on my punk girl...

New female base model

I started a fresh base female nude model a couple of weeks back. I know I've made a few in the past but I wanted to correct some topology and add in some mesh detail to the base model before sculpting (ear, finger nail and toe nail detail). Doing this will also eliminate the need to go back and retopologise once I'm done. I've decided to go with a slightly higher detail base mesh, rather than the low poly one's that I have used in the past - I initially used the base mesh from one of my last base models and added in all the extra detail.

I also decided to give UVLayout a go. It's pretty good but takes a bit of getting used to the old school interface. However, there are loads of tutorial videos on the author's website. Just dig a bit and you'll find them.

I'll hopefully start building a character around her soon. Just not too sure what yet... hmm.

This is something I started working on a while back and haven't taken her much further. I would love to get back to working on her. She was mostly inspired by Tat Girl from Feast II & III. I originally set out to make a game version of her, but I'm not sure if I'll still do that. I'm planing on having her covered in crazy tattoos, etc. Oh yeah, the hair is purely a rough placeholder model. I roughed it in so that I could get a basic idea of the hairstyle I was aiming for.

Okay... So now I have Blog... The reason I've decided to start blogging is to seperate the WIP section from unearthedart.com, which will in-turn evolve into a more streamlined portfolio based website.

I want to try and keep unearthedart.com simple and clean and not have it bogged down with with all my unfinished work (yes there is quite a bit of that). I'm hoping to be more productive over the coming days - I'm already busy with a new character which I'll try and post soon. As far as the other recent work in progress on unearthedart.com, I'll be transferring that all here.
